The Potential of Nanotechnology in Medicine: Insights from Prof. Ijeoma Uchegbu

Prof. Ijeoma Uchegbu currently is Chair in Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at University College London and President-elect of Wolfson College, Cambridge.

Ijeoma’s research really comes down to understanding why medicines do or don’t work.

Regulatory approval can be given to a medicine where it is the only option for that condition despite only a small percentage of the population responding favourably or when there are significant side-effects.

Ensuring efficient delivery of the drug to the appropriate site in the body can improve efficacy and reduce off-target effects. Ijeoma’s group uses of nanoparticles (1/100th the width of a human hair) to aid delivery of the drug as well as utilising alternative routes of administration.

Prof. Ijeoma Uchegbu will be opening Drug Discovery 2024 with her keynote presentation on Wednesday 2nd October and will provide preclinical examples of her research.
